Windows 10 Pro activates with either a valid digital license or a valid product key for the Pro edition. Open Settings > Update & Security > Activation to see the current activation status before buying or entering anything.
Check whether Windows is already activated
- Open Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Choose Activation.
- Read the edition and activation status.
If Windows reports that it is activated with a digital license, you do not need to enter another product key.
Enter a legitimate Windows 10 Pro key
If the device has Windows 10 Pro installed but is not activated and you own a valid Pro product key, use the Change product key option on the Activation page and enter the 25-character key. Connect to the Internet so Windows can contact Microsoft’s activation service.
Home and Pro licenses are not interchangeable
A Windows Home license does not automatically activate Pro. Upgrading editions requires an appropriate Pro license or entitlement. Likewise, reinstalling the wrong edition can prevent automatic activation even when the device has a valid digital license for another edition.
Windows 10 normal support ended October 14, 2025. Activation can still matter on an existing Windows 10 PC, but activating the OS does not restore normal security support.
