Windows 10 does not natively install Android APK files as ordinary Windows applications. An APK is an Android application package and normally needs an Android device, emulator, or another environment specifically designed to run Android apps.
Use a reputable Android emulator when appropriate
If you need an Android app on a Windows 10 PC, choose a well-established emulator from its official publisher, install it, and obtain apps through a trusted app source supported by that environment. Compatibility varies because Android apps may depend on Google services, phone hardware, or a particular Android version.
Avoid APK “installers” that promise native Windows conversion
Changing the file extension or opening an APK with an archive utility does not turn it into a Windows program. Be cautious with sites that require unknown executables, browser extensions, or security changes before they will “install” an APK.
Microsoft’s Windows Subsystem for Android was a Windows 11 feature and Microsoft ended support for it in 2025; it was not a general Windows 10 APK solution. Windows 10 itself also left standard free support in October 2025, which makes building a new Android-app workflow around it less attractive.
