You can install Windows 10 without typing a product key during Setup in many cases. That does not give you a free Windows license. A PC with a matching digital license or product key stored in its firmware may activate automatically later; otherwise, you need a valid license to activate Windows.
How to Install Windows 10 Without Entering a Product Key During Setup
Step 1: Create official Windows installation media
Use Microsoft’s Windows installation-media instructions and a blank USB drive with at least 8 GB of space. Back up the USB first because its contents will be erased.
Step 2: Back up the PC
If you are reinstalling Windows, copy important files somewhere safe before starting. A clean installation can erase personal files, applications, settings, and manufacturer customizations.
Step 3: Start Windows Setup
Boot the PC from the installation USB when performing a clean installation, or start setup.exe from the media when following an appropriate in-place reinstall path.
Step 4: Choose I don’t have a product key if Setup offers it
If the product-key screen provides I don’t have a product key, select it to continue. This skips key entry; it does not create an activation entitlement.
Step 5: Install the correct Windows edition
Choose the edition that matches your existing digital license or the license you intend to use, such as Home or Pro. A digital license for one edition does not normally activate a different edition.
Step 6: Check Activation after installation
Once Windows is online, open the Activation settings and verify its status. A matching digital license or firmware-embedded key may activate automatically.
Digital Licenses and Firmware Keys
Microsoft notes that many modern devices contain a product key in firmware. If that key matches the Windows edition being installed, Setup can apply it automatically. Other PCs use a digital license, so no manual key entry is required during a reinstall of the matching edition.
What Happens If Windows Does Not Activate?
Skipping the key-entry screen is not a license bypass. If the PC has no valid activation entitlement, obtain a legitimate license and activate the correct edition rather than using activation cracks or unauthorized keys.
Windows 10 Support Note
Normal Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft recommends Windows 11 on compatible hardware. Windows 10 installation media remains useful for recovery and specific legacy needs, while eligible Windows 10 22H2 PCs can receive ESU security updates during the transition.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Windows 10 free if I skip the product key?
No. Skipping key entry during Setup does not grant a Windows license.
Will Windows reactivate automatically after a reinstall?
It can when the PC already has a matching digital license or compatible firmware-embedded key.
Do I need to retrieve my key before reinstalling?
Not necessarily. Check whether the PC uses a digital license before relying on key-retrieval utilities.
Can I install Pro if my license is for Home?
A Home entitlement does not normally activate Pro. Install the edition that matches your license.
Should I use an activation crack?
No. Use legitimate activation methods and licenses.
