Task Manager shows how much memory Windows 10 is using and which applications are consuming it. This is the quickest way to determine whether RAM pressure is contributing to slow performance.
See total memory usage
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- If Task Manager opens in a compact view, expand it to show more details.
- Select the Performance tab.
- Choose Memory.
The Memory page shows installed RAM, current use, available memory, speed, and other hardware details. Windows also uses memory for caching, so RAM being in use is not automatically a problem.
Find applications using the most RAM
Open the Processes tab and select the Memory column to sort processes by current usage. A browser with many tabs, a virtual machine, a game, or a media application can legitimately use several gigabytes.
Investigate when memory remains close to capacity during your normal workload and the PC becomes sluggish, applications fail, or disk paging becomes excessive. If one program’s memory use continuously grows, updating or restarting that program may resolve a memory leak.
Get more detailed information
Resource Monitor and other built-in performance tools can provide additional process and memory details when Task Manager is not enough. Do not disable the Windows page file simply because RAM usage is high; virtual memory is an important part of Windows memory management.
If ordinary daily work consistently exceeds the installed RAM, a compatible memory upgrade may help. For older Windows 10 PCs, balance upgrade costs against the fact that Microsoft’s standard free Windows 10 support ended in October 2025.
