A Windows 10 PC may not have a product key that you need to retrieve. Many Windows 10 systems activate with a digital license, which does not require you to enter a 25-character key when reinstalling the same edition on the same device.
Check activation before looking for a key
- Open Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Choose Activation.
- Read the activation status and note whether Windows reports a digital license.
Where a product key may be located
Microsoft says the location depends on how Windows was purchased. A new PC may have the key preinstalled in firmware, included with its packaging, or shown on a Certificate of Authenticity. A retail purchase may provide the key on a card, label, or confirmation associated with the purchase.
Why key-finder utilities can be misleading
Do not assume that a code displayed by an unknown key-finder program is the unique license you will need later. Windows activation can use digital licensing and manufacturer-installed activation methods that make manual key retrieval unnecessary.
Reinstalling Windows 10
If the device already has a valid digital license, Microsoft says you can normally reinstall the same Windows 10 edition and choose I don’t have a product key if Setup asks. Windows should reactivate online after installation when the licensing conditions are met.
Windows 10 Home and Pro reached the end of normal support on October 14, 2025, so reinstalling it does not restore ordinary security support.
