How to Download Excel for Free in Windows 10: A Step-by-Step Guide

You do not need to download a pirated copy of Microsoft Excel to use Excel features at no cost. Microsoft offers Excel for the web with a Microsoft account, while the full desktop Excel application normally requires an eligible Microsoft 365 subscription or other legitimate Office license.

Windows 10 reached the end of standard support on October 14, 2025, so consider moving a compatible PC to a supported Windows version as well.

How to Use Excel for Free in a Web Browser

  1. Open Microsoft’s Microsoft 365/Excel web experience.
  2. Sign in with a Microsoft account.
  3. Open Excel.
  4. Create a workbook or open a supported workbook from your cloud storage.
  5. Edit it in the browser.

The web version covers many everyday spreadsheet tasks, but it does not include every feature available in desktop Excel.

How to Get the Desktop Excel Application

Use a legitimate Microsoft 365 plan or an Office license that includes desktop Excel. If Microsoft currently offers a trial for which you are eligible, review its billing terms and cancellation date before starting it.

Do Not Download “Free Excel” Installers from Unofficial Sites

Cracked Office packages, KMS activators, modified installers, and product-key generators can violate licensing terms and are a common malware risk. They can also disable security controls or make Office updates unreliable. Download Microsoft software through Microsoft’s official services or another authorized channel.

Excel for the Web vs. Desktop Excel

The browser version is suitable for many formulas, tables, charts, and collaboration tasks. Advanced add-ins, macros/VBA, specialized data tools, offline workflows, and other desktop capabilities can differ. Check the features your workbook needs before assuming the free web version is a full replacement.

Alternatives

If you do not require Excel specifically, other legitimate spreadsheet applications can open many .xlsx files. Complex formatting, macros, data connections, and formulas may not transfer perfectly, so verify important workbooks after conversion.
