“Overlay” can refer to several different features in Windows 11, so there is no single switch that disables every overlay. Identify which application is drawing on top of games or other programs before changing settings.
Turn off the overlay in its own app
- Identify the overlay by its logo, shortcut, notification, or controls.
- Open the application that provides it.
- Open that application’s settings.
- Find its in-game overlay, performance overlay, recording overlay, or similar option.
- Disable only the feature you do not want.
- Restart the affected game or application and test again.
Common overlay sources
Gaming, graphics, chat, recording, and hardware-monitoring software can all provide overlays. Windows gaming features can also display widgets or recording controls. Because their menus change independently, use the current settings for the specific software installed on your PC.
If an unknown overlay appears unexpectedly, do not start deleting services or Registry entries. Check installed applications and startup items, then run Windows Security if you suspect unwanted software.
Disabling an overlay may also disable related functions such as frame-rate displays, screenshots, recording shortcuts, chat controls, or performance monitoring. Change one source at a time so you can identify what actually fixed the conflict.
