“Registry error” is a vague label, and Windows 11 does not include a button that scans the Registry and repairs every problem. If Windows is unstable, start with supported system-repair tools and the specific symptom rather than deleting Registry entries or running a generic registry cleaner.
Start with Windows Update and a restart
Install pending Windows updates from Settings > Windows Update, then restart the PC. If the problem began immediately after installing a program, driver, or update, note that timing because it can point to a more specific fix.
Repair Windows system files
- Search Start for Terminal or Command Prompt.
- Choose Run as administrator.
- Run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth and allow it to finish.
- Then run sfc /scannow.
- Restart Windows after the scans complete.
DISM repairs components that Windows uses for servicing, while System File Checker checks protected system files. These commands are more appropriate for general Windows corruption than manually editing unrelated Registry keys.
If the problem started recently
System Restore can return system files, Registry settings, drivers, and installed programs to an earlier restore point without being a general-purpose file backup. Search for Create a restore point, open System Restore, and review the available restore points. Read the affected-programs information before proceeding.
Use Startup Repair when Windows will not start correctly
Windows Recovery Environment includes Startup Repair for startup-related failures. You can reach recovery options through Settings when Windows still starts, or Windows may enter recovery automatically after repeated failed starts.
Do not use registry cleaners as routine maintenance
Removing “invalid” Registry entries is not a meaningful performance tune-up, and an incorrect change can prevent applications or Windows from working. Microsoft does not provide a general registry-cleaner utility for Windows 11.
If a trusted software vendor documents one specific Registry value for one specific problem, back up the relevant key or create an appropriate recovery point before changing it. That is very different from bulk-cleaning the Registry.
When repair tools do not solve the problem
Use the error message, application name, Event Viewer record, or failing hardware component to narrow the diagnosis. Windows 11 also offers recovery and reinstall options, but back up important files before using a repair method that could remove applications or data.
