Windows 11 can’t open .pages files directly, because Pages is an Apple app. The best free option is iCloud.com: sign in with an Apple Account (free to create), open Pages, upload the file, and then download it as a Word document or PDF. If you know who sent it, ask them to export it from Pages as Word or PDF instead. For a quick look at the first page, rename a copy of the file to .zip and open the preview image inside.

Method 1: Convert with Pages on iCloud.com
- Go to icloud.com in Edge or Chrome and sign in with your Apple Account. If you don’t have one, select Create Apple Account; it’s free and works without an iPhone.
- Select Pages.
- Select the Upload button (a cloud with an up arrow) and choose the .pages file.
- Double-click the document to open it. You can read and edit it in the browser.
- To get a Windows-friendly copy, select the More (…) button > Download a Copy, and choose Word or PDF.
The Word file opens in Microsoft Word, Word for the web or Google Docs. Fonts that only exist on Macs are replaced, so check the layout.
Method 2: Ask the sender to export it
On a Mac, in Pages, they can choose File > Export To > Word or PDF. On an iPhone or iPad, tap the More button > Export. It’s the most reliable option, because the conversion uses the original fonts and settings.
Method 3: Quick preview with the ZIP trick
- Make a copy of the file, so the original stays intact.
- In File Explorer, turn on View > Show > File name extensions.
- Rename the copy from .pages to .zip and confirm.
- Double-click the ZIP and open the preview.jpg file (or the QuickLook folder in older files).
This shows an image of the first page only. You can’t edit it, but it’s enough to see what the document is.
Sending a file back to a Mac user
Pages opens Word files without trouble, so if you edit the document on Windows, send it back as .docx. In Pages on iCloud.com you can also share the document with them directly: select Collaborate (the person icon), add their email, and you can both edit the same file in the browser without converting it at all.
About online converters
Many websites offer free .pages to .docx conversion. They work, but they upload your file to someone else’s server. Avoid them for private or work documents and use iCloud.com, which is Apple’s own service, instead.
Troubleshooting
iCloud says the file can’t be opened
Very old Pages files (from Pages ’09) may need a Mac to open. Ask the sender to save it in a current version.
The downloaded Word file looks wrong
Mac fonts were replaced. Change the fonts in Word, or download as PDF if you only need to read or print it.
The ZIP trick shows no preview
Some files don’t include a preview image. Use Method 1.
