Windows 10 uses different controls for ordinary folders, shortcuts, and standard desktop icons. Choose the matching procedure below. A custom icon changes appearance; it does not change the file type or the program that opens your documents.
Change an ordinary folder icon
- Right-click the folder and choose Properties.
- Open Customize > Change Icon, if that option is available.
- Choose a built-in icon or use Browse to select an icon file.
- Select OK, then Apply and OK.
Special folders and some locations do not provide the same Customize controls. Do not assume that every item in File Explorer supports this procedure.
Change a shortcut icon
- Right-click the shortcut and choose Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab and select Change Icon.
- Select the icon and confirm with OK and Apply.
This changes that shortcut, not all copies of the application or every associated document. Some app shortcuts expose different controls.
Change This PC or Recycle Bin
Open Settings > Personalization > Themes > Desktop icon settings. Select the standard desktop icon, choose Change Icon, and apply the selection. To undo it, use Restore Default for the selected standard icon.
Use a suitable custom file
A genuine ICO file is a practical choice. Windows can also offer icons embedded in suitable program or library files. Renaming a PNG or JPG extension to .ico does not convert the image.

If a folder icon does not appear
Check the icon file and its location first, then reopen the folder view. June 2026 Windows security changes can prevent custom folder icons from untrusted desktop.ini files, including some downloaded or network content. That is different from a missing icon file and does not mean the folder’s contents are unavailable.
Microsoft explains the change in its custom-folder-icon notice. Avoid weakening trust protections simply to restore a decorative icon.
Change size or undo a selection
For desktop icon size, right-click an empty desktop area and choose View, then a size. To undo an ordinary folder or shortcut customization, return to its icon picker and restore or reselect the original icon as available. There is not one universal reset button for every icon type.
