Task Manager provides a useful first look at Windows 10 performance. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc and use the Performance tab to watch CPU, memory, disk, network, and GPU activity while the computer is doing the task that feels slow.
Check the main hardware resources
- Open Task Manager.
- Select More details if necessary.
- Open Performance.
- Watch CPU, Memory, Disk, and GPU utilization.
- Return to Processes and sort by the resource that is consistently busy.
Interpret the numbers in context
A CPU reaching 100 percent briefly during a demanding task can be normal. A disk remaining at very high active time while the PC barely responds can indicate a storage bottleneck. Very low available memory during everyday work can point to insufficient RAM or an application consuming too much memory.
Check startup applications
If the computer is slow immediately after sign-in, review Settings > Apps > Startup. Disable only applications you recognize and do not need at every login.
Performance problems can be hardware problems
Low free storage, overheating, a failing disk, insufficient RAM, or an aging processor will not be fixed by a generic cleanup utility. Back up important data if a drive behaves abnormally.
Windows 10 normal support ended October 14, 2025. Performance troubleshooting should therefore include whether the hardware is suitable for Windows 11 or should be replaced.
