Task Manager shows how much memory Windows 10 and your applications are using. High RAM use is not automatically a problem: Windows deliberately uses available memory for active programs and caching. Look for sustained memory pressure, poor responsiveness, or an application whose usage keeps growing unexpectedly.
Check total memory usage
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Performance.
- Choose Memory.
- Review the amount in use, available memory, committed memory, speed, and hardware information shown for the system.
Find which applications use the most RAM
Open Task Manager’s Processes page and select the Memory column to sort applications by current memory use. A browser with many tabs, a game, virtual machine, video editor, or development tool can legitimately use several gigabytes.
Do not chase an arbitrary “low percentage”
Unused RAM provides little benefit by itself. Windows can release cached/standby memory when applications need it. A machine using 60 or 70 percent of its RAM while working normally does not necessarily need cleanup.
Signs that memory capacity may be insufficient
Frequent heavy paging, applications closing due to memory limits, major slowdowns while switching tasks, or consistently tiny available memory under your normal workload can indicate that more RAM would help. Check disk and CPU activity too, because they can produce similar symptoms.
If one program’s memory continually increases
Update or restart that application and reproduce the problem. A memory leak is an application or driver issue, not something fixed by a generic “RAM cleaner.” Avoid utilities that promise to free memory by forcing useful cached data out of RAM.
Before upgrading memory
Check the computer or motherboard’s supported RAM type, maximum capacity, slot configuration, and whether memory is soldered. Software cannot make an incompatible module work.
Windows 10 support note
For this guidance, remember that Windows 10’s standard free-support period ended October 14, 2025; post 55636 should be maintained with that lifecycle in mind. If an older PC needs substantial hardware investment, also consider whether it supports a currently maintained operating system.
