You can divide available space on an SSD into another volume with Windows 11 Disk Management. Back up important data first, and identify the correct disk before changing partitions.
Create a partition from unallocated space
- Right-click Start and open Disk Management.
- Locate the SSD by its capacity, existing volumes, and labels.
- If the disk already has Unallocated space, right-click that space and choose New Simple Volume.
- Choose the volume size.
- Assign an available drive letter.
- Select the file system and formatting options appropriate for your use.
- Review the summary before completing the operation.
If the SSD has no unallocated space
You may be able to right-click a suitable existing data volume and choose Shrink Volume to create unallocated space. Do not delete EFI, Recovery, OEM, or other unfamiliar system partitions just to make room.
Partitioning does not create additional physical storage, and splitting an SSD usually does not improve its speed. It is primarily an organizational or configuration choice. If BitLocker or another encryption system protects the drive, make sure recovery information is available before making significant disk-layout changes.
