If an ASUS laptop running Windows 10 needs a fresh start, Windows’ Reset this PC feature is usually the simplest option. A reset can remove applications and settings, and some choices remove personal files too, so make a verified backup before proceeding.
Back up and prepare first
Copy documents, photos, browser data, license information, and other important files to separate storage. Connect the laptop to AC power. If device encryption or BitLocker is enabled, make sure you can access the recovery key before beginning recovery work.
Reset Windows 10 from Settings
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.
- Under Reset this PC, choose Get started.
- Select Keep my files or Remove everything.
- Choose the reinstall method Windows offers, such as cloud download or local reinstall.
- Review the summary carefully before confirming the reset.
Keep my files is less destructive, but it still removes installed applications and resets many settings. It is not a substitute for a backup.
If Windows will not start
Windows Recovery Environment can provide Reset this PC and other recovery tools. ASUS models may also have manufacturer-specific recovery options. The available keys and recovery features vary by model, so use the support documentation for the exact laptop rather than assuming one ASUS recovery key works everywhere.
Factory image versus Windows reset
An ASUS factory-recovery image can restore vendor applications and drivers that shipped with the machine. A standard Windows reset may produce a different software state. If you specifically need the original factory configuration, check whether ASUS provides recovery media or a model-specific recovery service.
If you are selling the laptop
Use the removal/drive-cleaning choices appropriate for transferring ownership and follow current Microsoft guidance. Organizations handling regulated or highly sensitive data should use their approved data-destruction process rather than relying on a consumer reset.
Consider Windows 11 instead
Windows 10’s standard free support ended October 14, 2025. If this ASUS model meets Windows 11 requirements, reinstalling or upgrading to a supported operating system may be a better long-term choice than restoring Windows 10.
