Windows 10 includes Reset this PC, which reinstalls Windows and can either keep personal files or remove them. A reset is a major recovery step, so back up important data and save any BitLocker recovery key before starting.
Reset the laptop from Settings
- Connect the laptop to power.
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.
- Under Reset this PC, select Get started.
- Choose Keep my files or Remove everything.
- Choose Cloud download or Local reinstall when offered.
- Review the summary carefully and continue only when you understand what will be removed.
Keep my files is not a complete backup guarantee
That option preserves personal files while removing installed applications and resetting many settings. Important files should still be backed up independently before a recovery operation.
If Windows will not start
Windows Recovery Environment can provide Reset this PC and other troubleshooting options. An encrypted computer may request its BitLocker recovery key.
Consider the operating system’s support status
Normal Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025. If the laptop meets Windows 11 requirements, moving to a supported Windows release may make more sense than rebuilding Windows 10.
