If audio is not working correctly in Windows 10, Windows Update is the best first place to check for an updated sound driver. If Windows does not provide a suitable driver, use the computer or audio-device manufacturer’s official support site.
Check Windows Update first
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install applicable updates.
- Review optional driver updates if Windows offers them.
- Restart the PC after the update.
Use Device Manager when necessary
Open Device Manager and expand Sound, video and game controllers. Right-click the relevant audio device and choose the driver-update option. Windows can search for an appropriate driver.
Check the manufacturer’s support page
Laptops and branded desktops often use customized audio packages. If Windows Update does not solve the problem, search the PC manufacturer’s official support site using the exact model number.
Reinstall rather than endlessly updating
If a driver appears corrupted, uninstalling the audio device in Device Manager and restarting can allow Windows to detect and reinstall it. Avoid third-party driver-download utilities.
Normal Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025. These troubleshooting steps remain useful on existing systems, but eligible PCs should be evaluated for Windows 11.
