How to Azure AD Join Windows 11: A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners

Azure Active Directory is now called Microsoft Entra ID. Joining a Windows 11 PC to an organization therefore appears in current Microsoft documentation as a Microsoft Entra join. This is intended for organizational accounts and should be performed according to the organization’s device-management policy.

Before joining the PC

Confirm that the Windows edition supports Microsoft Entra join, that you have an authorized organizational account, and that your administrator permits users to join devices. Windows 11 Home does not provide the same organizational join capabilities as Pro and higher business editions.

Join through Windows Settings

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Accounts.
  3. Open Access work or school.
  4. Choose the connection option.
  5. Select the option to join the device to Microsoft Entra ID when it is available.
  6. Sign in with the authorized work or school account.
  7. Verify the organization shown in the confirmation screen before completing the join.

Enrollment can apply company management

A Microsoft Entra join can also lead to device-management policies, security requirements, application deployment, or Microsoft Intune enrollment depending on the organization’s configuration.

Do not join a personal PC casually

Ask the organization what management it applies to personally owned devices before joining one. In some environments, simply adding a work account for specific applications is more appropriate than joining the entire device.
