A Seagate external hard drive normally works with Windows 11 as soon as you connect it, provided the drive uses a file system Windows can read. Before formatting or changing partitions, check whether the drive already contains files you need.
Connect and open the Seagate drive
- Connect the drive directly to an appropriate USB port on the PC.
- Wait a few seconds for Windows to detect it.
- Open File Explorer and select This PC.
- Open the Seagate drive under Devices and drives.
- Create, copy, or move files as you would with another storage drive.
Portable drives usually receive power through USB, while some larger desktop models require their own power adapter.
If the drive does not appear
Try another USB port or cable, then check Disk Management to see whether Windows detects the physical disk. A detected drive may simply be missing a drive letter. Do not initialize or format a disk that contains needed data merely because File Explorer cannot see it.
If the drive was formatted only for macOS, Windows may not read it natively. Reformatting can make a drive Windows-compatible but erases its existing contents, so copy the data elsewhere first.
