How to Disable Startup App Windows 10: Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners

Disabling a startup app stops it from launching automatically when you sign in to Windows 10 without uninstalling it. Open Settings > Apps > Startup and turn off applications you do not need immediately after login.

Disable an app at startup

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Choose Startup.
  4. Find the application.
  5. Turn its switch off.

You can still open the application normally later.

Use Task Manager as an alternative

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc and open the startup-apps view. Select an item and disable it. Task Manager can show the startup impact of some applications, which can help identify programs that add significant sign-in time.

Leave important background tools alone

Do not disable entries you do not recognize without checking what they do. Security software, hardware control panels, accessibility utilities, backup tools, and synchronization apps can rely on startup components.

Windows 10 normal support ended October 14, 2025. Startup optimization can still improve responsiveness on an older PC, but it does not change the operating system’s support status.
