Before you start
- Confirm the model. The full name is HP LaserJet Pro M1136 Multifunction Printer. Do not use a package made for a different LaserJet just because the name looks similar. Printing might work while scanning does not.
- Check your system type. Open Start, then Settings > System > About, and read the System type line. It says whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit, which you need if HP’s page asks.
- Unplug the printer’s USB cable from the PC. HP’s support agents advise installing the software first and connecting the printer afterward.
- Use an account that is allowed to install software. On a work or school computer, installing drivers may be restricted.
Download and install the driver from HP
- Close any open programs and make sure the printer’s USB cable is not plugged into the computer.
- In your web browser, go to HP’s Software and Driver Downloads page for the HP LaserJet Pro M1136 Multifunction Printer. The page loads the downloads available for this model.
- Check the operating system shown on the page. If it is not Windows 10 with your system type (32-bit or 64-bit), change it so the list shows the correct files.
- Find the full feature software and driver in the list and download it. This is the complete package, so it is a large file and can take several minutes on a slow connection.
- When the download finishes, open your Downloads folder, right-click the file, and select Open. Follow the prompts in HP’s installer.
- Plug the USB cable into the computer and turn the printer on when the installer tells you to. Connect it directly to a USB port on the PC rather than through a hub.
- Restart the computer if you are asked to, then print a test page to confirm the printer responds.
Let Windows install a basic driver instead
Microsoft says Windows supports most printers out of the box, and it recommends Windows Update as the way to get printer drivers. Use this route if HP’s installer fails or you only need to print. A basic driver may not include HP’s scanning software, so use HP’s full package if you need every function of this multifunction printer.
- Connect the printer to the computer with the USB cable and turn it on. Windows should detect it and try to install a basic driver automatically.
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check for updates. Install anything that is offered, then restart.
- If the printer still does not work, right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
- Expand the category that contains the printer, right-click the printer, and select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for updated driver software and wait for Windows to finish.

Confirm it worked, or undo it
- Check the printer list. Open Settings and go to Printers & scanners. The M1136 should appear in the list of installed printers.

- Undo the installation. Remove HP’s software in Control Panel > Programs and Features, and remove the printer from Printers & scanners by selecting it and choosing the remove option.
- Go back to the previous driver. If a driver update caused the problem, open Device Manager, right-click the printer, select Properties, open the Driver tab, and select Roll Back Driver. This needs administrator permission.
Troubleshooting
The HP installer fails or stops during USB setup
HP’s support agents suggest a clean start: uninstall any existing HP printer software in Control Panel > Programs and Features, disconnect the printer’s USB cable, restart the PC, download the Windows 10 package again from HP’s page, and run it before reconnecting the printer. If it stops at the same point, try a different USB port or a different cable.
Windows does not recognize the printer
Turn the printer off and unplug it, wait 30 seconds, plug it back in, and turn it on. Make sure the USB cable is firmly seated at both ends and plugged straight into the computer. Then open Device Manager and look for a warning icon on the printer or under the USB controllers. If you see one, right-click that device, select Uninstall device, and restart so Windows tries to install it again.
Print jobs get stuck after installing
Search the taskbar for services and open Services. Double-click Print Spooler, select Stop, then open it again and select Start. Check that Startup Type is set to Automatic.
You cannot install software on this PC
Work and school computers are often set up so that only an administrator can add drivers. Ask your IT support to install the HP package rather than looking for a workaround.
Windows 10 is no longer supported
Microsoft retired Windows 10 Home and Pro in October 2025, and version 22H2 is the final version. The printer can still be installed, but HP and Microsoft may not add new drivers for older devices on Windows 10. Keep the installer file you downloaded in case you need to reinstall later.

Can I use the M1136 without HP’s software?
