To enable editing in Word, select Enable Editing on the yellow Protected View bar at the top of the document. Word opens files from email and the internet in this read-only mode for safety. If the bar says the document is Marked as Final, select Edit Anyway. If there’s no bar but you still can’t type, the document may have editing restrictions; go to Review > Restrict Editing > Stop Protection.
Applies to: Word for Microsoft 365, Word 2024, 2021, 2019 and 2016 on Windows and Mac, and Word for the web. Last reviewed October 8, 2026.

1. Protected View (yellow or red bar)
Files downloaded from the internet or opened from email attachments open in Protected View. Select Enable Editing on the yellow bar. Only do this if you trust the sender, because malicious documents rely on you enabling editing and macros.
A red bar means Word found a problem with the file. Open it for editing only if you’re sure it’s safe, using the Edit Anyway option on the bar or in File > Info.
Stop Protected View for trusted folders
Rather than turning Protected View off, add the folder you use for work files as a trusted location: File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings > Trusted Locations > Add new location.
2. Marked as Final
The author marked the document as finished. Select Edit Anyway on the banner, or go to File > Info > Protect Document and select Mark as Final again to turn it off.
3. Restricted editing
- Go to Review > Restrict Editing.
- Select Stop Protection at the bottom of the pane.
- Enter the password if asked. Without the password, ask the author to unlock it.
Some documents only allow filling in forms or adding comments; the pane shows what’s allowed. See how to unlock a document in Word, and how to lock a Word document from editing for the reverse.
4. The file itself is read-only
- Read-only attribute: close the file, right-click it in File Explorer, choose Properties, untick Read-only and select OK.
- Opened from a read-only location: files in ZIP folders, on a CD or in a shared folder you can only read must be saved somewhere else first with File > Save As.
- “Open as read-only” recommended: the author saved it that way. Select No when Word asks if you want to open it read-only.
5. Word isn’t activated
If the ribbon is greyed out and Word says “Product Deactivated” or “Unlicensed Product”, Word is in reduced functionality mode and can only view files. Sign in with the account that has your Microsoft 365 subscription in File > Account, or see how to get Word for free for options.
6. Word for the web
If the document opens in Viewing mode, select Viewing (or the pencil) at the top right and switch to Editing. If that option isn’t available, the person who shared it gave you view-only access; ask them for edit access.
Troubleshooting
Enable Editing does nothing
Close Word completely and open the file again. If it still fails, save a copy with File > Save As and open the copy.
Someone else is editing it
Files on shared drives lock while another person has them open. Wait, or ask them to close it. Files in OneDrive or SharePoint let several people edit at once.
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to click Enable Editing?
For files you expected from people you trust, yes. Be cautious with unexpected attachments, and never enable macros unless you’re sure.
Does this work in Excel?
Yes, the same Protected View bar appears. See how to change read-only mode in Excel.
