You can put Microsoft Teams on the Windows 11 desktop by creating a normal app shortcut. The easiest method depends on how Teams is installed, because current Teams installations do not always expose the same executable path as older versions.
How to Create a Microsoft Teams Desktop Shortcut
- Open Start and choose All. This displays the installed app list.
- Find Microsoft Teams.
- Drag Teams from the app list to an empty area of the desktop. When Windows supports dragging that app entry, it creates a shortcut rather than moving the installed application.
- Double-click the new shortcut to confirm that it opens Teams.
If Dragging Teams Does Not Create a Shortcut
Windows also supports desktop shortcuts through the desktop’s New > Shortcut command, but manually browsing to a Teams executable is not ideal because the installation location can vary and app updates can change implementation details.
Another practical option is to pin Teams to the taskbar instead. Open Start, find Teams, right-click it, and choose the available pin option. A taskbar icon is often more convenient than a desktop shortcut.
Do Not Use an Old Teams.exe Path from an Older Tutorial
Microsoft has changed the Teams client and its installation model over time. Instructions that depend on an old per-user Teams.exe path may no longer match the current Teams app. Creating the shortcut from the installed app entry avoids hard-coding an obsolete file location.
Teams Web Shortcut
If you normally use Teams in a browser, you can create a shortcut to the Teams website instead of the installed app. Right-click the desktop, choose New > Shortcut, and enter the Teams web address you normally use. Your browser may also offer an option to install a website as an app.
A web shortcut and the Windows Teams application are not identical. Features such as notifications, meeting integration, account handling, and device access can behave differently, so use the installed client if your organization expects it.
If the Shortcut Opens the Wrong Account
The shortcut launches Teams; it does not permanently bind itself to a particular work, school, or personal account. Check the account/profile controls inside Teams if the wrong organization or account appears after launch.
