How to Clear the Teams Cache in Windows 10

To clear the Teams cache in Windows 10, quit Teams, press Windows logo key + R, paste the cache folder path for your version of Teams, and delete everything in that folder. Then open Teams again. For the new Teams, you can also reset the app in Settings.

Applies to: Microsoft Teams (new and classic) on Windows 10. Keep in mind that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Security updates now come only through the Extended Security Updates program, which stops on October 12, 2027.

Before you start

  • Clearing the cache doesn’t delete your chats, files or teams. Those are stored online. If Teams is missing altogether on a newer PC, start by downloading Microsoft Teams on Windows 11.
  • You may have to sign in again, and some personal settings may go back to the defaults.

When clearing the cache helps

Clearing the cache is worth trying when Teams:

  • Gets stuck loading, or shows a blank white or grey window
  • Keeps asking you to sign in, or signs in to the wrong account
  • Shows old profile pictures, names or channel lists
  • Won’t load new messages or shows the wrong status
  • Uses far more memory than usual after an update

It won’t fix problems with your microphone, camera or internet connection, which need different fixes.

Clear the cache for the new Teams

  1. Right-click the Teams icon in the notification area and select Quit.
  2. Press Windows logo key + R to open Run.
  3. Paste %userprofile%\appdata\local\Packages\MSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Microsoft\MSTeams and select OK.
Run dialog with the new Teams cache folder path typed in and OK highlighted
Paste the path (1) and select OK (2).
  1. Press Ctrl + A to select everything in the folder, then press Delete.
File Explorer showing the Teams cache folder with all items selected
Select everything (1) and delete it (2).
  1. Open Teams again.

Clear the cache for classic Teams

  1. Quit Teams from the notification area.
  2. Press Windows logo key + R, paste %appdata%\Microsoft\Teams, and select OK.
  3. Delete everything in the folder, then open Teams again.

Both cache folders live inside AppData, which you can also browse by opening the AppData folder in Windows 10.

Reset the new Teams app instead

  1. Select Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
  2. Select Microsoft Teams, then Advanced options.
  3. Select Reset. This also removes your Teams settings on this PC.

Clear the new Teams cache with PowerShell

If you do this often, PowerShell is quicker. Close Teams, open PowerShell, and run these two commands:

  • Stop-Process -Name ms-teams -Force -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
  • Remove-Item "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\Packages\MSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Microsoft\MSTeams\*" -Recurse -Force

The first command makes sure Teams isn’t running in the background. Then open Teams from the Start menu.

If you still have classic Teams

Microsoft has retired the classic Teams app and moved everyone to the new Teams. If your PC still runs the old version, install the new Teams from Microsoft’s website or Microsoft Store rather than fixing the old cache, since classic Teams no longer gets updates.

Troubleshooting

  • Windows reports that the folder can’t be found. You’re using the path for the other version of Teams. Check which Teams you have, then use the matching path.
  • Some files won’t delete. Teams is still running. Open Task Manager, end any Microsoft Teams or ms-teams tasks, and try again.
  • Teams is still slow or blank after clearing. Sign out and back in, then try Repair or Reset in the app’s Advanced options. As a test, open Teams in your browser at teams.microsoft.com. If it works there, reinstall the app.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know which Teams I have?

The new Teams shows New or Teams (work or school) and has a newer look. If the new Teams path above doesn’t open, you have classic Teams.

Teams still isn’t working. What next?

Uninstall and reinstall it. The removal part works like uninstalling any program on Windows 10.

Will clearing the cache delete my meeting recordings?

No. Recordings are saved in OneDrive or SharePoint, not in the Teams cache.

How often should I clear the Teams cache?

Only when something goes wrong. Teams rebuilds the cache each time, so clearing it regularly just makes Teams slower to start for a while.

Does this work for Teams on Windows 11?

Yes. The new Teams uses the same cache folder and steps on Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Do I need administrator rights to clear the cache?

No. The cache is stored in your own user folder, so a standard account can clear it. Resetting or reinstalling the app may ask for approval.

Outlook keeps its own cache too, and clearing the Outlook cache in Windows 10 works in a similar way.

For admins, the cache locations are also listed in Clear the Teams client cache.
