You can download Windows 11 installation files from Microsoft while using a Mac, but how you run Windows depends heavily on whether the Mac has an Intel processor or Apple silicon. Do not follow an Intel Boot Camp tutorial on an Apple silicon Mac.
Download Windows only from Microsoft
Use Microsoft’s official Windows 11 download resources for installation media or disk images. Avoid modified Windows images and unofficial “preactivated” downloads. Downloading Windows does not itself provide a Windows license.
For an Intel Mac
Some Intel-based Mac models support Apple’s Boot Camp workflow for compatible Windows versions. Check Apple’s documentation for the exact Mac model before repartitioning the internal drive or assuming Windows 11 is officially supported through Boot Camp.
For an Apple silicon Mac
Apple silicon uses Arm architecture and does not use the traditional Boot Camp dual-boot workflow. Windows is normally run through compatible virtualization software using an appropriate Arm version of Windows. Follow the virtualization vendor’s current instructions and Microsoft’s licensing requirements.
For a USB installer intended for a PC
If you are downloading Windows on a Mac only to prepare installation media for another computer, use a tool and procedure designed to create UEFI-compatible Windows media. Verify the target PC meets Windows 11 requirements before installing.
