Running Windows 11 on a Mac depends heavily on the Mac’s processor. Intel-based Macs and Apple-silicon Macs use different architectures, so an installation method that works on one may not work on the other.
Apple-silicon Macs
Macs with Apple M-series processors use ARM architecture. The practical approach is virtualization with a product that supports Windows 11 on ARM. Parallels Desktop is one well-known option, and other virtualization products may support ARM guests as their capabilities evolve.
- Choose a virtualization product that explicitly supports your Mac model and Windows 11 on ARM.
- Install it from the publisher’s official source.
- Use its supported Windows 11 installation workflow.
- Activate Windows with a valid license when required.
Do not download modified Windows images or activation tools.
Intel Macs
Older Intel Macs may be able to run Windows through virtualization. Boot Camp support was designed around Intel Macs, but Windows 11 hardware requirements and Apple’s supported Boot Camp configurations mean you should not assume an older Intel Mac is officially eligible for a native Windows 11 Boot Camp installation.
Check application compatibility
Windows 11 on ARM can emulate many x86 and x64 Windows applications, but hardware drivers, games, anti-cheat systems, and specialized software may have limitations. Verify critical applications before purchasing virtualization software or a Windows license.
For occasional Windows-only tasks, a remote Windows PC or cloud-hosted Windows environment can sometimes be simpler than maintaining a local virtual machine.
