You can download a legitimate Windows ISO from Microsoft using a Mac, but Windows 10 is now a legacy choice. Normal Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025, so use a supported Windows 11 release when the target hardware and virtualization software support it.
Download Windows from Microsoft
Use Microsoft’s official Windows download pages rather than third-party ISO sites. Downloading installation media does not provide a free Windows license; activation requirements still apply to the installation.
Intel Macs and Apple silicon Macs are different
Older Intel-based Macs and newer Apple silicon Macs use different processor architectures and virtualization options. Do not assume an old Boot Camp tutorial applies to an Apple silicon Mac. Apple’s Boot Camp Assistant is associated with supported Intel-based Mac models, not the normal Windows workflow for Apple silicon.
For a virtual machine
Use virtualization software that explicitly supports your Mac’s processor and the Windows version and architecture you intend to run. Follow the virtualization vendor’s instructions for obtaining and installing the appropriate Windows image.
For installation media for another PC
If the goal is merely to obtain a Windows ISO on the Mac for use elsewhere, verify the download from Microsoft and use an appropriate tool to create bootable media for the target PC.
For a new installation in 2026, Windows 11 should normally be preferred over Windows 10.
