You can make many desktop programs start automatically in Windows 11 by placing a shortcut in your personal Startup folder. Some apps also provide their own “start with Windows” setting, which is usually the best option when available.
How to Make a Program Run at Startup in Windows 11
- Press Windows + R.
- Type shell:startup and press Enter. File Explorer opens your user account’s Startup folder.
- Find the program you want to start automatically. You can search for it from Start.
- Create a shortcut to the program rather than moving the original application file.
- Place the shortcut in the Startup folder.
- Sign out and back in, or restart Windows, to test it.
Check the App’s Own Startup Setting First
Programs such as chat clients, cloud-storage tools, and launchers often include an option such as “Start when Windows starts.” Using the application’s own control can be more reliable because the app knows which background components it needs.
Manage Existing Startup Apps
Open Settings > Apps > Startup to turn supported startup entries on or off. Task Manager also has a Startup apps section that can help you identify software that launches when you sign in.
Do Not Add Unknown Programs
Only configure software you recognize and trust. Startup persistence is also used by unwanted software, so an unfamiliar entry should be investigated rather than enabled. A program that needs administrator permission may not work correctly from the normal Startup folder; do not weaken User Account Control to force it to launch.
