Windows 11 can open PNG image files with built-in apps such as Photos, and many browsers and image editors also support PNG. If double-clicking a PNG opens the wrong program, change its default app.
How to Open a PNG File in Windows 11
- Open File Explorer.
- Find the .png file.
- Double-click the file to open it with the current default image app.
Choose a Different App
- Right-click the PNG file.
- Select Open with.
- Choose Photos, Paint, a browser, or another trusted image application.
Change the Default PNG App
Right-click a PNG, use Open with > Choose another app, and use the available option to make that application the default for PNG files. You can also manage file-type defaults from Settings > Apps > Default apps.
If a PNG Will Not Open
Try another known-good PNG first. If only one file fails, it may be damaged or may have been given a .png extension even though it contains another file format. Avoid uploading private images to random “repair” websites. If all PNG files fail, repair or update the image application and install current Windows updates.
