To type on a PDF in Windows 10, open it in Microsoft Edge, which is the built-in PDF reader. If the PDF has form fields, click a field and type. For PDFs without fields, select Add text in the toolbar, click where you want the text, and type. Select Save or Save as when you’re done.
Applies to: Windows 10 with Microsoft Edge. Checked against Microsoft’s Edge guide on September 26, 2026.
Toolbar names can change a little between Edge versions, but the tools are the same.
Fill in a PDF form
- Right-click the PDF and select Open with > Microsoft Edge.
- Click a blank field and type. Press Tab to move to the next field.
- Select Save to keep your changes, or Save as to make a copy.

Add text anywhere on a PDF
- Select Add text in the toolbar.
- Click where you want the text and type.
- Use the options above the text box to change color, size, or spacing.
- Save the PDF.
Sign a PDF
- Select Draw in the toolbar and pick a color.
- Use your mouse, touchpad, or pen to write your signature on the signature line.
- Select Erase to fix mistakes, then save the PDF.

A drawn signature is an image of your signature. Some forms need a certified digital signature, which requires the sender’s signing service or a certificate.
Frequently asked questions
Can Edge change the text that’s already in a PDF?
No. Edge can add text, drawings, and highlights, but it can’t edit the PDF’s original words. To change the text, open the PDF in Word, which converts it to an editable document.
Why can’t I type in the form?
The PDF may not have fillable fields. Use Add text instead. If the PDF is a scanned image, Add text still works on top of it.
How do I make Edge my PDF app?
See how to set default apps in Windows 10.
On Windows 11, you can also turn pictures into PDFs. See how to convert JPG to PDF on Windows 11.
