To install Steam on Windows 11, go to Valve’s Steam download page, click Install Steam, run the downloaded SteamSetup.exe, approve the permission prompt, and follow the installer. Steam updates itself on first launch, then asks you to sign in or create a free account. After that, a few Windows 11 settings, such as Game Mode and graphics preferences, help games run their best.
Before you start
- Windows 11 in normal mode, not S mode. S mode only allows Microsoft Store apps. Check in Settings > System > Activation. Switching out of S mode is free but one-way.
- An administrator account to approve the installer.
- Free space. About 1 GB for Steam, plus 50 GB to 150 GB or more per modern game.
- Download only from Valve. Steam is free. “Steam installers” from other sites are a common malware trick.
Step 1: Download the installer
Open store.steampowered.com/about in Edge, Chrome or another browser and click Install Steam. SteamSetup.exe, a file of about 2 to 3 MB, goes to your Downloads folder.
Step 2: Run the installer
- Open Downloads (or click the file in your browser’s download list) and double-click SteamSetup.exe.
- If Windows shows a blue “Windows protected your PC” box, check the publisher is Valve, click More info and Run anyway. Downloads from Valve’s own site rarely trigger this.
- Click Yes on the User Account Control prompt.
- Click Next, choose a language, and keep the default folder,
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam. - Click Install, then Finish.
Step 3: Let Steam update and sign in
The first launch downloads the rest of the client. When it’s done, sign in with your account name and password, or scan the QR code with the Steam Mobile app. New users can click Create a free account. Steam Guard sends a code to your email or phone the first time you sign in on a new PC.
Step 4: Install a game
- Open the Library tab.
- Select a game and click Install.
- Pick a drive. An SSD gives much shorter loading times than a hard drive.
- Watch progress under Downloads at the bottom.

Optional Steam settings
- Start with Windows: turn off in Steam > Settings > Interface if you don’t play daily. It speeds up boot.
- Download region: pick the nearest region in Settings > Downloads if speeds are slow.
- Steam Overlay: Shift + Tab in games for chat and screenshots. Turn it off per game if it causes stutter.
Troubleshooting
The installer won’t run
Your PC may be in S mode, or Smart App Control is blocking it. Check Windows Security > App & browser control. Re-download from Valve’s site and right-click the file to Run as administrator.
“Steam needs to be online to update”
Check your connection, turn off any VPN, and allow Steam through Windows Security > Firewall & network protection > Allow an app through firewall.
A game won’t launch
Right-click the game, choose Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. Then try running the game as administrator and update your graphics driver.
