How to Fix a Slow Computer Windows 10: Essential Tips and Solutions

A slow Windows 10 PC can have different causes: a program using most of the CPU, memory, or disk; very low free storage; too many startup apps; malware; an update problem; or hardware that is reaching its limits. Start by identifying when the slowdown happens, then change one thing at a time and test again.

1. Identify the bottleneck

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. Select More details if needed.
  2. On Processes, sort by CPU, Memory, or Disk while the computer is slow.
  3. On Performance, watch whether one resource remains unusually busy during the same task.
  4. Write down the application name or the pattern you see before closing or removing anything.

2. Restart, then update Windows

Save your work and choose Start > Power > Restart. After sign-in, open only the program that reproduces the slowdown. This helps distinguish a one-time background job from a repeatable problem.

Then go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, install available updates, and restart if asked. Check optional driver updates only when they are relevant to the hardware issue. Do not install random driver packages just because the PC feels slow.

3. Free space without deleting needed files

Open Settings > System > Storage. Review Temporary files, Downloads, and large personal folders before selecting anything for removal. Storage Sense and Disk Cleanup can help with temporary files, but read each category carefully: removing prior Windows installation files can remove your normal rollback option.

Low free space can slow a PC and interfere with updates. If you need to preserve files, move verified copies to suitable storage rather than relying on a cleanup tool to decide what is disposable.

4. Reduce startup and background work

Open Task Manager’s Startup tab and disable only programs you recognize and do not need every time you sign in. A high-impact label is not proof that an app is safe to disable; a backup, security, accessibility, or sync tool may matter to you.

Check an application’s own settings for launch-at-sign-in and background activity. Change one or two optional apps first, then restart and compare the same workload. This may improve sign-in responsiveness; it does not guarantee a specific overall speedup.

5. Scan for malware

Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security > Virus & threat protection and run a scan. If Windows reports a threat, read the detection and follow its remediation steps. Avoid running multiple real-time antivirus products together, as that can create instability and reduce performance.

6. Choose power settings deliberately

On a laptop, a performance-focused power option can make the computer feel more responsive when connected to power, but it uses more energy and may create more heat. It is not available on every Windows 10 PC and is not a cure for a failing drive or inadequate memory. Return to a balanced option if battery time or temperature becomes a problem.

7. Assess hardware after the software checks

If the disk stays busy, the PC freezes, files disappear, or it makes unusual sounds, back up important data before extensive troubleshooting. An SSD or more RAM can help some older systems, but only after confirming compatibility and the actual bottleneck. A hardware upgrade cannot repair a malfunctioning storage device.

Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. After stabilizing an existing PC, consider whether it is compatible with Windows 11 or whether replacement is the safer long-term option.

Verify the change

Repeat the exact task that was slow: open the same files, launch the same application, or restart and sign in. Record what improved and what did not. That evidence is more useful than making many changes at once, because it points to the next appropriate fix.
