CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X4 came out in 2008, long before Windows 10, and Corel never updated it to support Windows 10. Many people still get it running by copying the disc to a folder, turning on .NET Framework 3.5 and running the installer in Windows 7 compatibility mode as an administrator. It doesn’t work on every PC, and on some the installer has damaged the Start menu, so create a restore point before you try.
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025, so a PC without Extended Security Updates no longer receives security fixes; that program runs until October 12, 2027.
This guide covers the install attempt, the known problems and two safer options: running X4 in a virtual machine or moving to a current version.
What you need
- Your original X4 disc or the setup files Corel provided, plus your serial number.
- An administrator account on the PC.
- About 1 GB of free space for the full suite.
- A restore point or full backup, made just before you start.
Only use your own licensed copy. “Pre-activated” X4 downloads from file-sharing sites are a common way to get malware.
Create a restore point first
Users on Corel’s community forum report that the X4 installer broke the Start menu and Explorer on some Windows 10 PCs, sometimes only for other user accounts. A restore point lets you undo that in a few minutes. Search for “Create a restore point” in the Start menu, select the C: drive, click Create and give it a name. Turn on .NET Framework 3.5
X4’s installer and some of its tools depend on older .NET components that Windows 10 doesn’t turn on by default. Open the Start menu, type “Turn Windows features on or off”, check .NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0), click OK and let Windows download the files. Copy the installer to the PC
Running setup straight from an old disc is a frequent cause of the installer stopping after the permission prompt. Copy the whole disc, including hidden files, into a folder such as C:\CorelX4. If your PC has no disc drive, copy it on another computer to a USB drive first.
Run setup in compatibility mode
- In the folder, right-click Setup.exe (or autorun.exe) and choose Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Check Run this program in compatibility mode for and choose Windows 7. If that fails later, try Windows XP (Service Pack 3).
- Check Run this program as an administrator, then click OK.
- Double-click the file, enter your serial number and choose a Typical install.
Set the program itself to compatibility mode
After installing, find CorelDRAW in the Start menu, right-click it, choose More > Open file location, then right-click the shortcut and open Properties > Compatibility. Set the same Windows 7 mode and run-as-administrator option. This stops many crashes at launch.
If you have the X4 Service Pack 2 installer from your original download, install it next. It fixed a number of stability problems in X4.
If something goes wrong

Safer option 1: Run X4 in a virtual machine
If you need X4 for old files or a specific workflow, install it inside a virtual machine running an older Windows, such as Windows 7, that you have a license for. The rest of your PC stays untouched. Safer option 2: Upgrade
Corel’s current CorelDRAW Graphics Suite opens X4 .cdr files and is supported on Windows 10 and 11. It’s sold as a subscription or a one-time purchase, with a free trial at coreldraw.com.
Keep in mind that Microsoft ended free security updates for Windows 10 in October 2025. If you’re planning to move to Windows 11 soon, X4 will face the same problems there.

Is CorelDRAW X4 compatible with Windows 10?
Not officially. X4 was built for Windows XP and Vista. It runs on many Windows 10 PCs with the steps above, but you won’t get support or updates.
Will my X4 files open in newer versions?
Yes. Newer CorelDRAW versions open X4 .cdr files. To open them in older versions later, use File > Save As and pick the version from the Version list.
Can I install X4 on Windows 11 instead?
The same steps apply, with the same risks. X4 is not supported on Windows 11 either, so a virtual machine or a current version is the more reliable choice there.
