How to Install RSAT on Windows 10

To install RSAT on Windows 10, go to Settings > Apps > Apps & features > Optional features and select Add a feature. Search for RSAT, check the tools you need, and select Install. When they finish, you’ll find them in the Start menu under Windows Administrative Tools.

RSAT (Remote Server Administration Tools) lets you manage Windows Server roles, such as Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and Group Policy, from your own PC.

Applies to: Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise (including Education), version 1809 or later. RSAT isn’t available on Windows 10 Home. Checked against Microsoft Learn on September 24, 2026.

Before you start

• Check your edition: go to Settings > System > About and look at Edition.
• Check your version: press Windows + R, type winver, and press Enter. You need version 1809 or later. Older versions used a separate RSAT download, so update Windows first.
• Sign in as an administrator and stay connected to the internet. The tools download from Windows Update.
• On a work PC, your IT team may control which features you can add.

Install RSAT from Optional features

1. Select Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features, then select Optional features.
2. Select Add a feature.

3. Type RSAT in the search box.
4. Check each tool you want.
5. Select Install.

Progress appears at the top of the Optional features page. Each tool can take several minutes.

Which RSAT tools do you need?

• RSAT: Active Directory Domain Services and Lightweight Directory Services Tools installs Active Directory Users and Computers and the Active Directory module for PowerShell. See how to install Active Directory Users and Computers on Windows 10.
• RSAT: Group Policy Management Tools for Group Policy.
• RSAT: DNS Server Tools and RSAT: DHCP Server Tools for those servers.
• RSAT: Server Manager for the Server Manager console.
• Others include Remote Desktop Services Tools, BitLocker Drive Encryption Administration Utilities, and Failover Clustering Tools.

Hyper-V Manager isn’t in the list. Turn it on in Control Panel > Programs > Turn Windows features on or off under Hyper-V > Hyper-V Management Tools.

Install RSAT with PowerShell

Right-click Start and select Windows PowerShell (Admin).

To see every RSAT tool and whether it’s installed, run:

Get-WindowsCapability -Online -Name Rsat* | Select-Object Name, State

To install one tool, such as the Active Directory tools, run:

Add-WindowsCapability -Online -Name Rsat.ActiveDirectory.DS-LDS.Tools~~~~0.0.1.0

To install all of them at once, run:

Get-WindowsCapability -Online -Name Rsat* | Where-Object State -eq NotPresent | Add-WindowsCapability -Online

Installing everything takes a while. Only do it if you need all the tools.

Open the RSAT tools

• Select Start > Windows Administrative Tools and choose the tool.
• Or press Windows + R and type the console name: dsa.msc (Active Directory Users and Computers), gpmc.msc (Group Policy Management), dnsmgmt.msc (DNS), or dhcpmgmt.msc (DHCP).
• In Server Manager, select Manage > Add Servers to add the servers you manage. Then open tools from the Tools menu.

To manage a server, your account needs admin rights on it and your PC must be able to reach it on the network.

If the install fails

• Error 0x800f0954: your PC gets updates from a company update server (WSUS) that doesn’t offer optional features. Your IT team can allow them in Group Policy under Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Specify settings for optional component installation and component repair.
• Windows 10 Home: RSAT can’t be installed. You need Pro or Enterprise.
• Stuck on Installing: restart, install any waiting updates in Windows Update, and try again.
• A tool is missing after install: restart the PC, then check that it shows as installed in Optional features.

Remove RSAT tools

Go to Settings > Apps > Apps & features > Optional features, select the tool, and select Uninstall.

Frequently asked questions

Is there still an RSAT download for Windows 10?

Only for versions before 1809, which are no longer supported. On current Windows 10, RSAT comes from Optional features.

Does RSAT install Active Directory on my PC?

No. RSAT only adds the tools to manage it. Active Directory runs on Windows Server domain controllers. Once the tools are installed, you can open Active Directory Users and Computers in Windows 10 from the Start menu.
