Active Directory Users and Computers (ADUC) is a management console for traditional Active Directory Domain Services. On a Windows 10 administrative workstation, it is normally provided by Microsoft’s RSAT Active Directory tools rather than by turning the PC itself into a domain controller.
Open Active Directory Users and Computers
- Open Start and search for Active Directory Users and Computers.
- If it appears, launch the console.
- You can also press Windows + R and run
dsa.mscwhen the ADUC component is installed.
If ADUC is not installed
Open Windows’ Optional features interface and install the appropriate RSAT Active Directory Domain Services/Lightweight Directory Services management tools when your Windows edition and organization support them. Modern Windows 10 releases provide RSAT as optional Windows features rather than requiring the old standalone RSAT installer used by much older versions.
If the console opens but you cannot manage the domain
Installing ADUC gives the computer the management console; it does not grant directory permissions. The PC also needs appropriate connectivity/name resolution for the domain, and the signed-in or supplied credentials need permission for the administrative action.
Do not use ADUC to make unreviewed bulk changes to users, groups, or organizational units. Directory changes can affect sign-in and access across an organization. Use delegated privileges and established administrative procedures.
For an ADUC management workstation, also account for Microsoft having ended standard free Windows 10 support in October 2025. Administrators setting up a new management workstation should use a supported Windows release and current Microsoft RSAT guidance.
