Windows 10 does not include a universal built-in EPUB reader. To open an EPUB ebook, use a reputable reading application that supports EPUB or, for unprotected books, convert the file to a format supported by the device or application you intend to use.
Install a trusted EPUB reader
- Choose an established ebook reader from its official publisher or a trusted application store.
- Install the application normally.
- Open the reader and use its Open, Import, or Add Book command.
- Select the EPUB file.
Some readers can also become the default application for .epub files so that double-clicking a book opens it automatically.
Microsoft Edge is no longer an EPUB reader
Older versions of Edge once supported EPUB files directly, but Microsoft removed that feature years ago. Tutorials that tell Windows 10 users simply to open EPUB books in Edge are obsolete.
DRM-protected books can require the seller’s software
An EPUB file purchased or borrowed through an ebook service may use digital rights management. In that case, use an application authorized by the provider rather than attempting to strip or bypass the protection.
Be careful with unknown ebook files
Obtain books from sources you trust. Avoid installing random “EPUB codecs,” browser extensions, or executable files offered merely to open an ebook.
Changing the default app
If more than one compatible reader is installed, Windows can associate the .epub extension with your preferred application through its default-app controls.
Windows 10 support status
For EPUB reading, remember that Microsoft ended standard Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. For a computer that remains online, moving to a supported operating system is preferable when the hardware permits it.
