Microsoft Excel is available as an iPad app, but whether you can edit spreadsheets without a paid Microsoft 365 subscription depends on the device, account, and Microsoft’s current licensing rules. The app itself can be downloaded from the App Store without an upfront purchase.
Get started with Excel on an iPad
- Open the App Store.
- Search for Microsoft Excel and verify that Microsoft is the publisher.
- Download and open the app.
- Sign in with a Microsoft account if Excel asks you to do so.
- Open an existing workbook or create a new one if your account and device are eligible for editing.
Free access and Microsoft 365 are not the same thing
Do not assume every iPad receives the full desktop-style Excel feature set for free. Microsoft can require a qualifying Microsoft 365 subscription for editing on certain devices or for premium features.
Excel for the web is another option
If the app’s licensing does not fit your needs, you can also sign in to Microsoft’s web-based Excel experience through a supported browser. Web features differ from the desktop and iPad applications.
Keep important workbooks backed up
Files can be stored in OneDrive or other supported locations. Before making major changes to an important workbook, confirm where it is saved and that synchronization has completed.
