Can You Install Windows 10 on a Chromebook? What Works

You can’t install Windows 10 on a Chromebook in any way that Google or Microsoft supports, and Windows 10 itself stopped receiving updates on October 14, 2025. The shortest reliable route is to leave ChromeOS in place and reach Windows from it: on the Chromebook, open Chrome, go to remotedesktop.google.com/access, select Access, and control a Windows PC you have already set up with Chrome Remote Desktop.

Applies to: Chromebooks running current ChromeOS, and Windows 10 or Windows 11 PCs used as the remote computer. Checked against Google Support and Microsoft Support on October 7, 2026.

Why Windows 10 doesn’t install on a Chromebook the normal way

A Chromebook is built to start ChromeOS and nothing else. Google’s developer documentation says production ChromeOS devices are locked down when they leave the factory, and a feature called verified boot checks that the software starting up is signed by Google. A Windows installer on a USB drive isn’t, so the Chromebook will not start it.

Guides that promise a full Windows install get around this by switching the Chromebook to developer mode and then replacing its firmware (the low-level software that starts the computer) with a version from a hobbyist project. Three documented facts matter before you consider that:

• Developer mode wipes the Chromebook. Google’s documentation says the switch erases the local data on the device.
• It lowers security and isn’t supported. Google states that developer mode makes verified boot more lax, and that changes made this way are not supported by Google, may cause hardware, software or security issues, and may void the warranty.
• Neither company supplies the missing pieces. Google’s recovery tools reinstall ChromeOS only, so drivers for the keyboard, touchpad, audio and Wi-Fi would have to come from unofficial sources.

Because that route depends on unofficial firmware and drivers that can’t be checked against Google or Microsoft documentation, this guide does not walk through it. The methods below get you a working Windows desktop or Windows apps without changing the Chromebook.

Is Windows 10 still worth installing anywhere?

Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. A Windows 10 PC still runs, but Microsoft says it no longer receives software and feature updates, security updates and fixes, or technical support. Microsoft’s own options for Windows 10 users are a free upgrade to Windows 11 on PCs that meet the requirements, a new Windows 11 PC, or the optional Extended Security Updates program for existing Windows 10 PCs.

For reference, Microsoft lists these minimum requirements for Windows 10: a 1 GHz or faster processor, 1 GB of RAM for 32-bit or 2 GB for 64-bit, a 32 GB or larger hard disk, and an 800 x 600 display. Meeting those numbers does not make a Chromebook a supported Windows device, because the firmware lock described above still applies.

What you need for the remote method

• A Windows PC that you own or are allowed to control, switched on and connected to the internet.
• The Chrome browser on that PC, updated to the latest version.
• Your Chromebook, connected to the internet.

Use a Windows PC from your Chromebook with Chrome Remote Desktop

Chrome Remote Desktop is Google’s remote access tool. Google lists Windows, Mac and Linux as computers you can set up for remote access. The Windows desktop appears in a Chrome tab on the Chromebook, and every Windows program keeps running on the PC.

1. On the Windows PC, open Chrome, type remotedesktop.google.com/access in the address bar, and press Enter. The Chrome Remote Desktop page opens.
2. Under Set up Remote Access, click Download.
3. Follow the onscreen directions to download and install Chrome Remote Desktop. Windows may ask for your computer password before the install finishes. Keep a note of the PIN used for this PC, because you will need it on the Chromebook.
4. On the Chromebook, open Chrome, type remotedesktop.google.com/access in the address bar, and press Enter.
5. Click Access to choose the Windows PC you set up.
6. Enter the PIN, then select the arrow to connect. The Windows desktop appears in the tab and you can use it with the Chromebook’s keyboard and touchpad.

Google says all remote desktop sessions are fully encrypted. To end a session, close the tab, or select Options and then Disconnect.

Use a Windows 365 Cloud PC in the browser

If you don’t have a Windows PC to connect to, Microsoft rents one. A Windows 365 Cloud PC is a Windows desktop that runs in Microsoft’s data centers and is streamed to your screen. It needs a Windows 365 subscription, which Microsoft sells in editions such as Business and Enterprise. Microsoft’s documentation lists ChromeOS as a supported operating system for the web client, with Google Chrome as a supported browser.

1. On the Chromebook, open Chrome and go to windows.cloud.microsoft, then sign in with the account that has the Windows 365 license.
2. Find your Cloud PC in the Your Cloud PCs section.
3. Select Open in browser.
4. In the In Session Settings window, choose which features the Cloud PC may use, such as the printer, microphone and clipboard.
5. Select Connect. The Cloud PC opens in the browser tab.

Use Microsoft 365 on the web instead of Windows

Many people want Windows only for Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Outlook. Those don’t need Windows. Microsoft says you can’t install the Windows or Mac desktop versions of Microsoft 365 on a Chromebook, but the web versions work in the browser.

1. On the Chromebook, open the browser and go to www.microsoft365.com. For email only, go to www.outlook.com.
2. Sign in with your personal Microsoft account or the account tied to your Microsoft 365 subscription.
3. Bookmark the page so you can get back to it quickly.

The web apps cover Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, OneDrive and Outlook. Microsoft also notes that the Android versions of Office, Outlook, OneNote and OneDrive are not currently supported on a Chromebook, so the website is the route to use.

What the Linux feature does and doesn’t do

ChromeOS includes an optional Linux development environment. To turn it on, select the time at the bottom right, open Settings, go to About ChromeOS > Developers, and next to Linux development environment select Set up. Google describes it as a way to develop software with Linux command line tools, code editors and IDEs. It is not a Windows installer, and Google’s help pages don’t describe running Windows inside it, so treat any guide that relies on it for Windows as unsupported.

How to confirm it worked, and how to undo it

• Chrome Remote Desktop worked if the Windows desktop is visible in the Chrome tab and responds to your clicks. Nothing was changed on the Chromebook, so there is nothing to undo there.
• A Cloud PC worked if it opens in the tab after you select Connect. Close the tab to leave it.
• If you already put the Chromebook in developer mode, Google’s documentation says you can return to normal mode by restarting and pressing the Spacebar at the firmware screen. Expect local data to be erased again, so back up first.
• If the Chromebook no longer starts ChromeOS, use Google’s recovery process. You need a USB flash drive of at least 8 GB that you don’t mind erasing and another computer with Chrome, where you install the Chromebook Recovery Utility. On most Chromebooks, press and hold Esc + Refresh, then press Power to enter recovery mode. Recovery permanently erases everything on the Chromebook’s drive, including downloaded files. Troubleshooting

• The remote connection won’t start. Google’s checklist: make sure both computers are online, and update Chrome. Antivirus or firewall software on the PC can also block it. Google says it needs outbound UDP traffic, TCP port 443 (HTTPS), and TCP and UDP port 3478 (STUN) to be allowed.
• You’re on a work or school network. Google notes that these networks may not allow Chrome Remote Desktop. Ask the administrator.
• The Chromebook belongs to work or school. Select the time at the bottom right. If the managed device icon is shown, an administrator controls the device and can restrict features. Google also says the Linux feature may be unavailable and that you can’t factory reset a work or school Chromebook yourself.
• No Cloud PC is listed at windows.cloud.microsoft. The account you signed in with may not have a Windows 365 license assigned. Check with whoever manages the subscription.
• You only want a clean Chromebook back. A factory reset (Powerwash) erases all user data. Back up to Google Drive first, sign out, press and hold Ctrl + Alt + Shift + r, select Restart, then select Powerwash and Continue.

Can I install Windows 10 on a Chromebook from a USB drive?

Not on a Chromebook in its normal state. Verified boot only starts software signed by Google. Getting past that means developer mode and unofficial firmware, which Google does not support.
