An ICA file is a small launch file that opens a work app or desktop through Citrix Workspace. Install Citrix Workspace (your IT team can tell you which version), then open the ICA file right after you download it. If it opens in Notepad instead, set Citrix Workspace as the default app for .ica files.

Before you start
- ICA files come from your work or school’s web portal. They only work for a short time, so open them soon after you download them.
- Only open ICA files from your organization’s own site.
Open the ICA file
- Install Citrix Workspace if it isn’t already on your PC. Ask your IT team for the right version or link.
- Start your app or desktop from your organization’s web page. An ICA file downloads.
- Open the file from your browser’s downloads. Your work app or desktop opens in a window.
If it opens in Notepad
Windows doesn’t know which app to use. Set the default:
- Select Start > Settings > Apps > Default apps.
- Select Choose default apps by file type.
- Find .ica, select the app next to it, and choose Citrix Workspace.

If it still won’t open
- Start the app again from your organization’s page to get a fresh ICA file.
- Restart your PC and try again.

Yes, it’s plain text, but it’s only connection settings. It won’t show you the app.
