Select the files on your desktop, right-click and select Cut. Open File Explorer, go to a folder such as Documents, and select Paste. The files move off the desktop but aren’t deleted. To hide everything without moving it, right-click the desktop and select View > Show desktop icons.

Move files into a folder
- On the desktop, select the files. Hold Ctrl to pick several, or drag a box around them.
- Right-click one of them and select the Cut icon (scissors), or press Ctrl + X.
- Press Windows logo key + E to open File Explorer, and go to Documents (or make a new folder there).
- Select Paste on the toolbar, or press Ctrl + V.
The files are now in that folder. Nothing goes to the Recycle Bin.
Other ways to tidy up
- Hide all icons: right-click the desktop, select View, and clear Show desktop icons. Do the same to show them again.
- Line them up: right-click the desktop and select Sort by > Name, or View > Auto arrange icons.

Can I undo a move?
