How to Rename a Pokemon in Pokemon Go

March 22, 2019 By Matt Jacobs

The Pokemon Go app on your iPhone gives you the ability to catch Pokemon in your real-world environment. These Pokemon can vary in their strength, and they can be powered up using two in-game mechanics called stardust and candy.

Since the game incentivizes you to catch many of the same Pokemon, you may have trouble telling them apart. Fortunately you are able to rename your Pokemon in Pokemon Go so that you can more easily distinguish specific Pokemon among the many of that species that you have caught.

How to Change the Name of a Pokemon in Pokemon Go

The steps in this article were performed on an iPhone 7 Plus in iOS 12.1.4. I am using the most current version of the Pokemon Go app that was available when this article was written. While this method could change in future versions of Pokemon Go, it has been this way for the majority of the app’s life, so it seems unlikely to change.

Step 1: Open the Pokemon Go app.

Step 2: Touch the Pokeball icon at the bottom of the screen.

Step 3: Choose the Pokemon option.

Are you unable to open Pokemon Go because it hasn’t been updated? Learn how to update your iPhone apps, even allowing the iPhone to update them automatically so that you can keep all of your apps up to date.
