How to Find the OneDrive Folder in Windows 11

To find your OneDrive folder in Windows 11, press Windows + E to open File Explorer and select OneDrive in the left pane. It’s usually labeled OneDrive – Personal. On your PC, the folder is at C:\Users\<your user name>\OneDrive unless you chose another place when you set it up.

The fastest shortcut is Windows + R, then type %OneDrive% and press Enter.

Applies to: Windows 11. Checked against Microsoft Support on September 24, 2026.

Open OneDrive in File Explorer

  1. Press Windows + E.
  2. Select OneDrive – Personal near the top of the left pane. A work or school account shows as OneDrive – followed by your organization’s name.
  3. The address bar shows you’re in your OneDrive folder.

Select OneDrive in the left pane (1). The address bar confirms where you are (2).

Open it with the Run box

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type %OneDrive%.
  3. Select OK.
Windows Run dialog with %OneDrive% typed in the Open box and the OK button highlighted
Type %OneDrive% (1), then select OK (2).

This works even if OneDrive is missing from the left pane of File Explorer, as long as OneDrive is set up.

Other ways to open it

  • Taskbar: select the OneDrive cloud icon near the clock, then the folder icon at the top of the panel.
  • Address bar: type C:\Users\<your user name>\OneDrive in File Explorer and press Enter.
  • Pin it: right-click the OneDrive folder in File Explorer and select Pin to Quick access.

Find the exact path

If the folder isn’t in the usual place, open it with %OneDrive% as shown above, then select an empty part of the address bar in File Explorer. The full path appears, such as D:\OneDrive, and you can copy it.

What the icons mean

  • Blue cloud: the file is online only. It downloads when you open it.
  • Green check: the file is saved on your PC.
  • Solid green circle with a white check: you chose Always keep on this device, so it stays on your PC.

Right-click a file and select Free up space to make it online-only again.

Your Desktop and Documents may be in OneDrive

If folder backup is on, your Desktop, Documents, and Pictures live inside the OneDrive folder. That’s why their path shows OneDrive\Documents instead of C:\Users\<name>\Documents.

To check, select the OneDrive icon near the clock, then Settings (the gear), then Sync and backup > Manage backup. Folders that are on are backed up to OneDrive.

Check that OneDrive is syncing

A file only appears on your other devices after OneDrive uploads it. To see what OneDrive is doing, select the cloud icon in the notification area at the right end of the taskbar (select the up arrow if it’s hidden). The panel shows recent files and messages such as Your files are synced or a list of files still uploading.

  • If syncing is paused, select the gear icon and choose Resume syncing.
  • If there’s no cloud icon, OneDrive isn’t running. Open the Start menu, search for OneDrive, and open it.
  • A red X on a file or folder means it can’t sync. Select the cloud icon to see the reason, such as a file name with characters OneDrive doesn’t allow, or a full storage plan.

Find a file online or in the recycle bin

If a file is missing from the folder on your PC, sign in at onedrive.live.com with the same Microsoft account. Use the search box at the top, or check Recycle bin in the left pane. Files you delete from OneDrive go there and can be restored. For a personal account, Microsoft keeps them for 30 days; work or school accounts usually keep them longer.

If the cloud icons are missing

The blue cloud and green check icons come from a feature called Files On-Demand, which keeps files online until you open them. If you don’t see the icons, or the Free up space option is missing when you right-click, open OneDrive’s Settings > Sync and backup > Advanced settings and turn on Files On-Demand. Without it, OneDrive downloads every file to your PC, which can fill a small drive.

Check how much OneDrive storage you have

Select the cloud icon on the taskbar, then the gear icon > Settings > Account. The storage bar shows how much of your plan is used. A free Microsoft account includes 5 GB, which fills quickly if your Desktop, Documents, and Pictures are all backed up. When OneDrive is full, new files stop syncing until you free up space online or upgrade your plan.

If there’s no OneDrive folder

  • Set up OneDrive: select Start, type OneDrive, open the app, and sign in with your Microsoft account. Follow the steps to choose where the folder goes.
  • Install it: if the app isn’t there, get it from the Microsoft Store.
  • Add it to File Explorer: see how to add OneDrive to File Explorer in Windows 11.

Move the OneDrive folder

To store it on another drive, unlink OneDrive first: go to OneDrive Settings > Account > Unlink this PC. Move the folder in File Explorer, then sign in again and select Change location to pick the new place. Microsoft’s guide is Change the location of your OneDrive folder.

Frequently asked questions

Is the OneDrive folder the same as my Documents folder?

No, but if OneDrive folder backup is on, Documents is inside the OneDrive folder.

Can I have more than one OneDrive folder?

Yes. A personal account and a work or school account each get their own folder and their own entry in the left pane.

How do I stop OneDrive from backing up my Desktop?

Open Sync and backup > Manage backup as described above and turn off the folders you don’t want backed up. Windows asks whether to keep a copy of the files on this PC.

If I delete a file from the OneDrive folder, is it gone online too?

Yes. The folder is synced, so deleting a file on your PC deletes it from OneDrive and your other devices as well. You can still restore it from the OneDrive recycle bin for a limited time.

Why can’t I find a file I just downloaded?

Downloads go to the Downloads folder, which isn’t in OneDrive by default. See how to find downloads on Windows 11.
