How to Restore Hidden Desktop Icons in Windows 11 Easily

If desktop icons have disappeared in Windows 11, they may simply be hidden. Windows can hide all desktop icons with one View setting, while individual system icons such as This PC and Recycle Bin are controlled separately.

How to Show Hidden Desktop Icons in Windows 11

  1. Right-click an empty area of the desktop.
  2. Point to View.
  3. Make sure Show desktop icons is checked.

If that option was off, your normal desktop shortcuts and files should reappear immediately.

Restore This PC, Recycle Bin, and Other System Icons

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Personalization > Themes.
  3. Open Desktop icon settings.
  4. Check the system icons you want to display.
  5. Select Apply and OK.

If Only One Shortcut Is Missing

The shortcut may have been deleted or moved rather than hidden. Check the Recycle Bin and search for the application in Start. You can create or pin a new shortcut without restoring unrelated desktop items.

Check OneDrive Desktop Backup

If OneDrive backs up your Desktop folder, your desktop files may be associated with the OneDrive Desktop location. A sign-in or sync problem can therefore make the desktop appear different. Check OneDrive’s status before moving or deleting large groups of files.

Do Not Reset the PC for Missing Icons

Missing desktop icons are normally a display, shortcut, profile, or synchronization issue. A Windows reset is disproportionate unless the computer has much broader problems and you have already diagnosed them. Start with the View and Desktop icon settings above.
