Safe Mode starts Windows 11 with a limited set of drivers and services so you can troubleshoot startup, driver, and software problems. The most dependable route from a working desktop is through Advanced startup.
Steps
Step 1: Open Recovery settings
Open Settings > System > Recovery.
Step 2: Start Advanced startup
Next to Advanced startup, choose Restart now and confirm. Save open work first.
Step 3: Open Startup Settings
After Windows enters the recovery menu, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
Step 4: Choose a Safe Mode option
After the PC restarts, choose Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, or Safe Mode with Command Prompt using the number/function key shown on screen.
Step 5: Restart normally when finished
After troubleshooting, restart Windows normally. A one-time Startup Settings selection should not permanently keep the PC in Safe Mode.
What Happens Next
Windows starts with reduced functionality. Screen resolution and some devices may look or behave differently until you return to normal mode.
Troubleshooting and Useful Details
If Windows cannot reach the desktop, Windows Recovery Environment may appear after failed startups or can be entered from suitable recovery/install media. Avoid repeatedly interrupting boot unless necessary, because recovery access methods depend on the system state.
