To update apps in Windows 10, open Microsoft Store, select See more (the three dots) > Downloads and updates, and then select Get updates. Apps you got from the Store update from there. Programs you installed from a website usually update themselves or have a Check for updates option in their own menu.

Update Microsoft Store apps
Most Windows 10 PCs now have the newer Microsoft Store. In it, select Library in the lower-left corner, then Get updates. If your Store looks like the pictures below instead, follow these steps:
- Select Start and open Microsoft Store.
- Select See more (the three dots) in the upper-right corner, then Downloads and updates.
- Select Get updates. The Store downloads any updates it finds.
Turn on automatic app updates
In the newer Store, select your profile picture at the top, select Settings, and turn on App updates. In the older Store:
- In Microsoft Store, select See more > Settings.
- Turn on Update apps automatically.

Update other programs
- Open the program and look under Help or Settings for Check for updates or About.
- Or download the newest version from the maker’s official website and install it over the old one. See how to install apps and software in Windows 10.

Check which version you have
- Store apps: go to Settings > Apps > Apps & features, select the app, and select Advanced options. The version is listed near the top.
- Other programs: open the program and look for About, usually under Help or Settings. Compare it with the newest version on the maker’s website.
Update many apps at once with winget
Winget can update Store apps and many programs from websites in one go. Right-click Start, select Windows PowerShell, and run:
- winget upgrade to see which apps have updates.
- winget upgrade –all to install all of them.
Winget comes with the App Installer app on Windows 10, version 1809 and later. Some programs it lists may need you to confirm a prompt while they update.
If an app won’t update
- Updates are stuck on Pending. Press Windows key + R, type wsreset.exe, and press Enter. A blank window opens, and the Store restarts when it’s done clearing its cache.
- The Store shows an error. Check that the PC’s date and time are correct, then sign out of the Store and sign back in.
- Nothing helps. Run the troubleshooter in Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Store Apps.

Will updating an app delete my files or settings?
No. Updates keep your files, sign-ins, and settings. If something seems off after an update, restart the app before you try anything else.
Can I stop just one app from updating?
Not in Microsoft Store. Its automatic update setting covers all apps. If you turn it off, remember to select Get updates yourself now and then, so you still get security fixes.
Will apps keep updating now that Windows 10 support has ended?
For now, most do. Each app maker decides how long to support Windows 10. Microsoft 365 apps get security updates on Windows 10 until October 10, 2028, but other apps may stop sooner. Check each app’s website if you depend on it.
Do I need a Microsoft account to update apps?
Free apps from the Store can usually update without one. Apps you bought, and some others, need you to sign in to the Store with the account you used to get them.
