To make the taskbar transparent in Windows 10, go to Start > Settings > Personalization > Colors and turn on Transparency effects. The taskbar, Start menu and Action Center become slightly see-through, so your wallpaper shows through them.

Turn on transparency effects
- Select Start > Settings > Personalization.
- Select Colors.
- Turn on Transparency effects.
Make the effect easier to see
The effect is light, so it’s easy to miss. These settings help:
- On the same Colors page, under Choose your default Windows mode, select Dark.
- To tint the taskbar with a color, pick an accent color and select Start, taskbar, and action center.
A colorful or bright wallpaper also makes the see-through effect easier to spot.
Pick a taskbar tint that suits your wallpaper
When Start, taskbar, and action center is on, the taskbar takes on your accent color. On the Colors page you can:
- Check Automatically pick an accent color from my background, so the tint matches your wallpaper.
- Select Custom color and drag the picker for an exact shade.
- Pick a darker color for a subtle, smoky look, or a bright one if you want the taskbar to stand out.
Make it more see-through with a registry setting
A registry value makes the taskbar noticeably clearer when it uses your accent color. Back up the registry first.
- Press Windows logo key + R, type regedit, and select OK.
- Go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced. - Right-click the right pane, select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value, and name it
UseOLEDTaskbarTransparency. - Double-click it, set Value data to 1, and select OK.
- Restart the PC, or sign out and back in.
Make sure Transparency effects and Start, taskbar, and action center are both on. To undo it, delete the value or set it to 0.
Prefer a clean desktop? Auto-hide the taskbar
Right-click the taskbar, select Taskbar settings, and turn on Automatically hide the taskbar in desktop mode. The taskbar slides away until you move the pointer to the bottom of the screen.
If transparency doesn’t work
- The switch is on but nothing changes: go to Settings > Ease of Access > Display and turn on Show transparency in Windows.
- Start, taskbar, and action center is grayed out: choose Dark under Choose your default Windows mode. It isn’t available in Light mode.
- Colors settings are locked: Windows may not be activated, or high contrast is on. Turn high contrast off with Left Alt + Left Shift + Print Screen.
Frequently asked questions
Can I make the taskbar fully clear?
Windows 10 doesn’t have a setting for that. Transparency effects is the built-in option. Other apps can do it, but only install apps you trust.
Why is the Transparency effects setting missing or not working?
Battery saver can turn transparency off to save power. Plug in your laptop or turn off battery saver. It can also stop working if your display driver is out of date.
Will it slow down my PC?
Usually not. On older or slower PCs, turning it off can help a little.
Does this work in Windows 11?
Yes. Go to Settings > Personalization > Colors and turn on Transparency effects. The taskbar effect is similar.
Can I make only the taskbar transparent?
No. Transparency effects applies to the taskbar, Start menu and Action Center together. Windows 10 doesn’t have a separate switch for each one.
Why does my taskbar look blurry instead of clear?
That’s how the effect is designed. Windows 10 blurs whatever is behind the taskbar so icons and text stay readable. A darker accent color or the registry setting above makes it look clearer, but it never becomes fully see-through.
