To turn off a keyboard backlight in Windows 11, use the keyboard’s lighting shortcut or its manufacturer’s app. Supported RGB devices can also use Settings > Personalization > Dynamic Lighting. There is no universal keyboard-brightness slider under Typing settings.
Use the keyboard’s backlight key
- Look for a key showing an illuminated keyboard or light-ray symbol. Do not confuse it with a screen-brightness icon.
- Press that key. If it acts as a normal function key instead, hold Fn while pressing it.
- Repeat the documented shortcut to cycle through brightness levels until the lighting is off.
- Check the exact laptop or keyboard manual if the shortcut does nothing. The key combination depends on the model and Fn-lock setting.
For example, Lenovo’s backlight guide describes Fn + Spacebar or Esc on supported models. Dell’s guide identifies several possible function keys. These are examples, not shortcuts that work on every computer.
Use Windows Dynamic Lighting when supported
- Press Windows + I.
- Open Personalization > Dynamic Lighting.
- If the keyboard appears as a supported device, select it to change that device’s lighting rather than every connected accessory.
- Set its brightness to zero to turn the lighting off, then check the physical keyboard.
If the keyboard is not listed, use its hardware shortcut or manufacturer software. Switching off Windows’ control of Dynamic Lighting is not necessarily the same as switching off the LEDs: another app or the device’s own profile may take over. Microsoft’s Dynamic Lighting guidance covers supported devices and app control.
Use the manufacturer’s lighting controls
Open the official utility for your exact laptop or keyboard, select the device, and look for brightness, backlight, or lighting effects. Choose Off or zero brightness and save the profile if required. Some keyboards can save an onboard profile; others need their software running.
A separate setting may control lighting before Windows loads, during sleep, or on battery power. Change only the relevant setting in the manufacturer’s documented controls. Avoid changing unrelated firmware options.
If the light comes back on
- Check whether a game or another RGB application is applying a lighting profile.
- Check separate plugged-in and battery settings, if your model has them.
- Confirm that the profile was saved to the intended device.
- Use the manufacturer’s current supported utility or hotkey component if the shortcut is unresponsive. A generic keyboard driver update does not add lighting hardware or guarantee a lighting menu.
Frequently asked questions
Will this turn off Caps Lock or charging lights?
Not necessarily. Status indicators are often separate from the key backlight and may not be user-configurable.
Does reducing screen brightness turn off the keyboard?
No. Screen brightness and keyboard lighting are separate controls.
Can every keyboard’s lights be controlled in Windows Settings?
No. Dynamic Lighting requires compatible hardware, and many laptop backlights use manufacturer-specific controls.
Will it save battery?
Turning off an illuminated keyboard can reduce its power use, but the effect on total battery life depends on the device and workload.
