To uninstall Microsoft Office in Windows 10, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features. Select your Microsoft 365 or Office product and select Uninstall. Your documents, spreadsheets, and other files stay on your PC.
Applies to: Windows 10, with Microsoft 365, Office 2024, 2021, 2019, or 2016. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025, so a PC without Extended Security Updates no longer receives security fixes; that program runs until October 12, 2027.
Office apps such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are removed together. In most cases you can’t remove just one app from a Microsoft 365 or Office suite. If only Outlook is misbehaving, repairing Outlook 365 in Windows 10 is worth trying before you remove the whole suite. Before you uninstall
- Know which account owns Office: open Word, select File > Account, and note the email under Product Information. You’ll sign in with it to reinstall.
- Save open work and close all Office apps, including Outlook and Teams if it’s running.
- Check support: Microsoft 365 apps get security updates on Windows 10 until October 10, 2028. Office 2021 and 2024 aren’t supported on Windows 10, so you may not get fixes for problems there.
Uninstall Office from Control Panel
- Select Start, type Control Panel, and open it.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select your Office product, such as Microsoft 365 Apps or Office Home and Student. For a single app you bought by itself, look for its name, such as Visio.
- Select Uninstall at the top of the list.
- Select Uninstall again to confirm, and follow the prompts.
- Restart your PC when it’s done.
You can also go to Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features, select the Office product, and select Uninstall.
If Office isn’t in the list
You may have the Microsoft Store version. Look for it in Settings > Apps > Apps & features and uninstall it there. If that fails, remove it with PowerShell:
- Right-click Start and select Windows PowerShell (Admin).
- Type
Get-AppxPackage -name "Microsoft.Office.Desktop" | Remove-AppxPackageand press Enter.
Remove Office completely with Microsoft’s tool
If Office won’t uninstall or leaves parts behind, use Microsoft’s uninstall tool (the uninstall troubleshooter):
- Go to Microsoft’s Uninstall Microsoft 365 or Office from a PC page and select Uninstall under the troubleshooter section.
- If a pop-up asks to open Get Help, select Open.
- Follow the prompts, then restart your PC.
The tool doesn’t remove Office 2024, and it has to run on the same PC as the Office you’re removing.
If the uninstall fails
- “Another installation is in progress”: wait for any Office updates to finish, or restart the PC and try again.
- The uninstall stops partway: restart, then use Microsoft’s uninstall tool above.
- Shortcuts are still in Start: restart the PC. If they’re still there, right-click each one and select Uninstall, or delete the leftover shortcut.
- Office 2024 won’t go: the uninstall tool can’t remove it. Use Programs and Features or Settings instead.

Will uninstalling Office delete my files?
No. It removes the apps only. Your documents stay where you saved them.

Follow Microsoft’s Install or reinstall Office on a PC steps. Uninstalling the apps doesn’t cancel a subscription.
How do I open Word files without Office?

Will my Outlook email be deleted?
Mail in Microsoft 365, Outlook.com, Gmail and other IMAP accounts stays on the server. If you used a POP account, your .pst data files stay on your PC, usually in Documents\Outlook Files.
Does uninstalling Office remove OneDrive?
No. OneDrive is part of Windows 10, so it stays installed and your synced files stay in place.
If Office just needs the latest fixes, try updating it before you remove it, the same way as updating Excel in Windows 10.
