How to Install Outlook on Windows 10

To install Outlook on Windows 10, open Microsoft Store, search for Outlook for Windows, and select Get (or Install). That’s the new Outlook, and it’s free. If you pay for Microsoft 365 or bought Office, classic Outlook comes with your Office apps when you install Microsoft Office on Windows 10.

Applies to: Windows 10 version 1809 or later. Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025, and only PCs enrolled in Extended Security Updates still get security fixes, through October 12, 2027.

Check whether you already have it

Select Start and type Outlook. If Outlook or Outlook (new) shows up, it’s already installed. Open it and add your email account. The new Outlook app works the same way on both systems, so you can follow our steps for setting up email on Windows 11.

Install the new Outlook from Microsoft Store

  1. Select Start, type Microsoft Store, and open it.
  2. Search for Outlook for Windows.
  3. Select Get or Install and wait for it to finish.

  1. Select Open, then add your email account when asked. Once it is added, you can send an email from your Windows 10 computer.

Install classic Outlook with Microsoft 365 or Office

Classic Outlook comes with Microsoft 365 and most Office versions.

  1. In your browser, go to microsoft365.com and sign in with the account you used to buy Office.
  2. Select Install apps (or Install Office) and run the file that downloads.
  3. Follow the prompts. Outlook is installed along with Word, Excel and the other apps in your plan.

If the install fails, or you want to remove Office first, start with uninstalling Microsoft Office in Windows 10. Ended up with an Outlook you don’t want, such as the new Outlook appearing after an update? Here’s how to remove Outlook from Windows 10, with separate steps for the new and classic versions.

Add your email account

  • New Outlook: on first launch, type your email address and select Continue. To add another later, select Settings (the gear) > Accounts > Add account. It works with Outlook.com, Microsoft 365, Gmail, Yahoo, iCloud, and most other IMAP accounts.
  • Classic Outlook: select File > Add Account, enter your address, and follow the prompts. For Gmail and some other providers, you sign in through a browser window that opens.

After installing

Switch between new and classic Outlook

If you have both, classic Outlook shows a New Outlook switch at the top right. Turning it on opens the new app. In the new app, turning the same switch off takes you back to classic Outlook. Your email stays on the server either way, so nothing is lost when you switch.

If Outlook won’t install or is missing

  • The Microsoft Store download fails. Press Windows + R, run wsreset.exe, sign in to the Store, and try again.
  • Classic Outlook says it isn’t available in the Microsoft Store. Many newer PCs come with only the new Outlook, so a classic Outlook icon may show an error saying it couldn’t verify and install the app. Download the classic Outlook installer for your language from Microsoft’s Install or reinstall classic Outlook page, run it, and sign in with the account that has your Microsoft 365 or Office license.
  • Classic Outlook isn’t in your Office apps. Office Home & Student doesn’t include Outlook. You need Microsoft 365 Personal or Family, Office Home & Business, or a work or school license.
  • New Outlook appeared without you installing it. Microsoft added it to Windows 10 through a 2025 update. It sits alongside classic Outlook and doesn’t replace it, and you can uninstall it from Apps & features if you don’t use it.
  • Outlook opens but won’t sign in. Check the date and time are correct, and that you’re using the right password for that email account.
