To check your laptop model in Windows 10, press Windows key + R, type msinfo32, and press Enter. In System Information, System Model is your laptop’s model and System Manufacturer is the company that made it.
Applies to: Windows 10. Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025, and only PCs enrolled in Extended Security Updates still get security fixes, through October 12, 2027.
Check it in System Information
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
msinfo32and press Enter. You can also search for System Information in the Start menu. - With System Summary selected, look at System Manufacturer and System Model.
System SKU is sometimes shown too. It’s a more exact code that support teams may ask for.
Check it with PowerShell
Open PowerShell and run:
Get-CimInstance Win32_ComputerSystem | Select-Object Manufacturer, Model
Check it with Command Prompt
Open Command Prompt and run systeminfo | findstr /i "model manufacturer". The System Manufacturer and System Model lines appear after a few seconds.
Other places to look
- The label: Most laptops have a sticker on the bottom with the model and serial number. Some have it under the battery.
- The DirectX Diagnostic Tool: Press Windows key + R, type
dxdiag, and press Enter. The System tab shows System Manufacturer and System Model. - The maker’s app: Many laptops come with a support app from the maker that shows the model.
The Settings > System > About page shows your processor and memory, but not the model.
Find the exact model code for support
Model names like “Inspiron 15” cover many versions. Support sites usually want a more exact code:
- Dell: the 7-character Service Tag on the label or in SupportAssist.
- HP: the Product number. On many HP laptops, pressing Fn + Esc shows it in a System Information window.
- Lenovo: the Machine Type Model (MTM), such as 20XW-00ABUS, shown in Lenovo Vantage or on the label.
Entering this code on the maker’s support site shows the right drivers, manuals and warranty status for your exact laptop.
Troubleshooting
- System Information takes a while to load. It gathers a lot of details. Wait until the System Summary values appear.
- dxdiag asks whether to check digital signatures. Either answer is fine for finding the model.
- The label is worn off. Check the BIOS or UEFI setup screen, which often shows the model and serial number on its first page.
Frequently asked questions
System Model shows “System Product Name” or “To be filled by O.E.M.” Why?
The company that built the PC didn’t fill it in. This is common on desktop PCs that were built from parts. Run Get-CimInstance Win32_BaseBoard | Select-Object Manufacturer, Product in PowerShell to see the motherboard model instead.
How do I find the serial number?

How do I see the rest of my laptop’s specs?

Is the model number the same as the serial number?
No. The model number identifies the type of laptop, shared by many units. The serial number is unique to your laptop and is used for warranty checks.
Can I find my laptop model if it won’t turn on?
Yes. Check the label on the bottom or under the battery, the original box, or your receipt. If you registered the laptop with its maker, the model is in your account on their site.
Does the model tell me if I can upgrade the RAM or SSD?
Yes. Search the exact model on the maker’s site for the service manual or specifications, which list the memory slots and drive type.
Why does Windows show a different name than the sticker?
Windows often shows the maker’s internal model code, while the sticker or box uses the marketing name, or the other way round. Both point to the same laptop. Search either one on the maker’s support site to confirm.
Can I change the model name Windows shows?
Not easily, and there’s no reason to. It comes from the laptop’s firmware. You can change the device name under Settings > System > About > Rename this PC, which is a different thing.
