WhatsApp doesn’t have a button to export a group’s contacts to Excel. You have two built-in options. For a small group, open Group info, view the member list, and copy the names and numbers into a spreadsheet. For an active group, use Export chat to save the conversation as a text file, then pull out the list of everyone who posted with an Excel formula. This guide covers both, plus how to keep phone numbers from being mangled in Excel. It also explains why browser extensions that “scrape” group members are best avoided.
Before you start: privacy
Group members shared their numbers with the group, not for a mailing list. Collecting them into a spreadsheet for marketing or messaging them outside the group without consent can break WhatsApp’s terms and privacy laws such as GDPR. Keep the list for legitimate uses, like a club roster or an event attendance list, and store it securely.
Method 1: Copy the member list by hand (small groups)
- Open the group in WhatsApp on your phone, or in WhatsApp on your computer.
- Tap or click the group name at the top to open Group info.
- Scroll to the member list. Tap View all if the full list is hidden.
- For each member, note the name and phone number. Members saved in your contacts show by name; tap them to see the number. Others show by number.
- In Excel, put names in column A and numbers in column B.
This is slow for big groups, but it’s accurate and works on every device.
Method 2: Export the chat and extract the members who posted
WhatsApp’s Export chat feature saves the conversation as a .txt file. Every message line includes who sent it, so you can build a list of active members. People who never posted won’t appear.
Export the chat
- Android: open the group, tap the three dots, then More > Export chat > Without media, and send the file to yourself by email or save it to Drive.
- iPhone: open the group, tap the group name, scroll down, and tap Export Chat > Without Media. Save it to Files or email it to yourself.
You’ll get a .zip or .txt file. Unzip it on your computer if needed.
Open it in Excel
- Open the .txt file in Notepad (or TextEdit on a Mac).
- Press Ctrl + A and Ctrl + C to copy everything.
- In a blank Excel sheet, click cell A1 and press Ctrl + V. Each message lands on its own row in column A.
Each row now looks something like 12/03/2026, 14:05 - Maria Lopez: See you at 7 on Android, or [12/03/2026, 14:05:22] Maria Lopez: See you at 7 on iPhone. For very large chats, Data > From Text/CSV also works; see how to import a CSV file into Excel.
Pull out the sender names
In cell B1, next to the first message, use one of these formulas (Microsoft 365 or Excel 2024):
- Android export:
=IFERROR(TEXTBEFORE(TEXTAFTER(A1," - "),": "),"") - iPhone export:
=IFERROR(TEXTBEFORE(TEXTAFTER(A1,"] "),": "),"")
Copy it down the column. Lines that are continuations of a long message or system messages (“Maria added Tom”) return a blank. Then, in another cell, type =UNIQUE(FILTER(B1:B10000,B1:B10000<>"")) to get one row per member. Members who aren’t in your phone’s contacts show as their phone number.

Keep phone numbers intact in Excel
- Format the column as Text first. Select the column, press Ctrl + 1, choose Text, then paste. Otherwise Excel may drop the leading + or zeros, or show long numbers in scientific notation.
- Remove spaces and dashes if you need a consistent format:

What about Chrome extensions and “export” tools?
You’ll find browser extensions and paid services that promise to download every member of a group in one click. They work by automating WhatsApp Web, which WhatsApp’s terms don’t allow. Using them can get your number banned, and they often ask for broad access to your browser data. If you manage a large community and need a member list, ask members to fill in a sign-up form instead, which also gives you their consent.
Frequently asked questions
Can I export WhatsApp group contacts from WhatsApp Web?
Not directly. WhatsApp Web shows the member list under Group info, but has no export option. Export chat is only available in the phone apps.
Do I need to be an admin?
No. Any member can see the member list and export the chat. In some communities and announcement groups, member phone numbers may be hidden from other members.
Can I save group members to my phone contacts instead?
Yes. In Group info, tap a member’s number and choose Add to contacts. This is one at a time.
